1-plank trucks are rolling stock used for transporting goods and materials throughout the railways, such as the North Western Railway.

They are also simply known as trucks in the UK narration or cars in the US narration.


Thomas & Friends

Thomas used two of these trucks to take steel frames to repair the Sodor Suspension Bridge.[2]

Thomas used one of these trucks to take a light bulb to the lighthouse at Tidmouth Beach, however, after going fast, Thomas crashed into a barrier and smashed the light bulb.[3]

Two of these trucks were pulled by a pump trolley operated by two workmen at Knapford Station Yard.[4]

Stephen had to take a truck of jam barrels from Brendam Docks to Ulfstead Castle, however, after Spencer pushed him, Stephen crashed into the buffers and four barrels of jam flew all over the Earl, Lady Hatt and the Fat Controller.[5]

Technical Details


The 1-plank trucks are based on the real London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Diagram 103 1-plank open wagons. These wagons were owned by the LNWR with some later being owned by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.[1]

In the CGI series, the 1-plank trucks have a gap on all sides, unlike their basis.


In the model series, the 1-plank trucks are painted in different liveries, such as yellow, red, brown and black, all in the same shade.

In the CGI series, the 1-plank trucks are painted in either the same or different shade of teal.

  • Another name for a 1-plank truck is a "conflat", a shortening of container flat, as 1-plank trucks are also used for transporting containers whilst also doing regular flatbed type duties.
