A Fright in the Tunnel is a magazine story.
Plot[]
Percy is busy shunting in the main station yard. He gets his work done very quickly and The Fat Controller is pleased. The Fat Controller then sends Percy off to help at the harbour. Percy enjoys going to the harbour as there are many tunnels to rush through and whistle loudly in on the way there. Percy gets quite a surprise when something flies past his face inside one tunnel.
In the sheds that night, Percy tells the other engines what happened but Thomas and Henry think he is being silly. The next morning, Henry goes through the same tunnel and ends up learning Percy was telling the truth when something flies by his face as well. He rushes to the harbour so quickly that he ends up ahead of schedule.
Henry meets Thomas at the harbour and explains what had happened but Thomas still thinks there is nothing to worry about. When Thomas goes through the tunnel, he does see something flying around and then it hangs upside down on a tree outside. Thomas' driver points out that it is a bat and that the noisy engines must have woken it up. At the yard, Thomas tells Percy and Henry that they must go through the tunnel more quietly in the future.
