A New Chance for Diesel is a magazine story from 1993.
Plot[]
Diesel has been stuck in his shed for several days but, this time, it was not for being naughty but for an overhaul. The Fat Controller gives Diesel another chance to be Really Useful. To make sure the overhaul was successful, he tells Diesel to take over for Percy in the yard. Diesel is delighted but Percy is far from feeling the same. Diesel tells Percy it was because The Fat Controller wants a more modern engine to do the job.
Percy sets off to the quarry, thinking Diesel is being truthful. After all, he did just get an overhaul. All throughout the day, Percy goes to and from the quarry. Back in the yard, Diesel works as hard as he can to prove he can take over Percy's job for good.
Once Percy's quarry runs are done, he is very tired. He finds The Fat Controller praising Diesel for everything going well in terms of both the overhaul and Diesel's work ethic. Diesel asks if this means he will take over Percy's job permanently. The Fat Controller laughs and says that Percy was only taking empty trucks to the quarry and the full ones will need a strong engine to take them to the coastal track to build a new sea wall. Diesel soon makes many trips with heavy stone and Percy jokes that at least Diesel is showing how Really Useful he is.
