Bad Luck Boxcar is a magazine story illustrated using images from the All Engines Go series.

Plot[]

One sunny day, Percy and Thomas are rushing to Brendam Docks to collect a boxcar destined for Vicarstown. They both think their day is going to be easy, but as they reach the docks, they get covered in falling bananas! Cranky apologises; the boxcar he is lifting has fallen open and released its load. Thomas and Percy aren't bothered, but Salty tells them it's a bad luck boxcar because it was full of bananas. Percy still isn't concerned, but Thomas isn't so sure. He's the number one engine and he's got to deliver the bananas whether they're bad luck or not.

A little further down the line, they meet Sandy and Carly erecting stop signs on the track Thomas and Percy want to go down. Thomas is sure it's a sign of bad luck - the bananas are making them go the long way to Vicarstown. Thomas wants to deliver the jinxed fruit as quickly as possible and decides to take a shortcut through Crumble Canyon. Rocks on the track cause Thomas to bump as he puffs along which, in turn, causes bananas to spill out of his wagon. One bananas splatters onto a boulder which then starts to roll towards them.

Thomas and Percy manage to escape the runaway boulder, but their rocky dash through the canyon had caused a hole in Thomas' boiler. In his frustration, Thomas tries to push the boxcar away from him, but to his surprise, it rolls right back towards him. Nia then peeps around the side of the boxcar and tells Thomas it was lucky she was there to bring his runaway boxcar back. Thomas and Percy tell Nia all about their journey with the boxcar. Percy thinks they had been lucky to avoid being badly damaged, while Thomas is adamant that they had been unlucky to have had so many problems. Nia says that the bad luck they encountered is stuff that happens everyday and if they think bananas are unlucky, then they'll get bad luck.

To get to Vicarstown and complete his delivery as quickly as possible, Thomas uses some slippery banana skins to slide down the tracks. At Vicarstown, Sir Topham Hatt is waiting for the bananas so he can make a banana split and Thomas arrives just in time with the cargo.
