Barrow-in-Furness, commonly known as Barrow, is a town and borough in Cumbria, North West England. It is the eastern terminus of the Main Line.

History[]

The North Western Railway has had running powers into Barrow Central station since an agreement with the LMS in 1925. For "through" trains, NWR engines are detached and BR, or "Other Railway", engines take over. Since 1925, the North Western Railway has also had a shed, turntable and servicing facility here. There is also a joint goods yard for exchange traffic.[1]

In May 1941, the station's original building was completely destroyed by the bombing caused by Germany during the Barrow Blitz of World War II. The station was completely rebuilt with a new main building in the late 1950s.

Trivia[]

  • Barrow-in-Furness is the only real station on both the Main Line and the North Western Railway network in general.
  • The real station of Barrow-in-Furness does not have a line running to the Isle of Walney, which is "replaced" on the maps by the Island of Sodor.
    • Interestingly, Walney itself had a 3ft narrow gauge railway owned by the Piel and Walney Gravel Company.
  • Before coming to Sodor, BoCo was allocated to Barrow-in-Furness between 1962 and 1965.
