Blowing Smoke is a magazine story.
Plot[]
One day, Thomas is hauling heavy trucks from the harbour up Gordon's Hill. At the top of the hill is a bridge that young trainspotters often stand on and greet the engines. Thomas happily whistles to them but the children end up covered in thick smoke as Thomas is puffing very hard. Next day is Gordon's turn to blow smoke all over the bridge as he rushes up and down the hill with the Express. Thomas asks Gordon that night if he saw anyone on the bridge but Gordon says he was going too fast to notice.
Then, a fête comes to the island which is set up at the top of the hill. Many people have to use the bridge to get to it. Two older children have contacted The Fat Controller about the engines and their dirty smoke, so The Fat Controller tells his engines about the issue. The engines feel sorry for what they have done and promise to be careful from now on.
Later in the day, it is Percy's turn to climb the hill. Percy ends up getting a big shock when he sees what looks like pink smoke being eaten by children on the bridge. Percy explains what he saw, but the other engines think he is being silly. When James arrived with passengers, the pink smoke is revealed to be candyfloss from the fête. Percy feels very silly!
