Several narrow gauge brake vans (also known as the guard's van) have been seen on the Mid Sodor and Skarloey Railways in The Railway Series. They are mainly used to carry the guard or workmen, but on rare occasions when the coaches are full, the guard will allow the passengers to travel in the brake van.
Notable Brake Vans[]
The following types of Narrow Gauge Brake Vans have their own separate pages or are listed on other pages:
The Parliamentary Brake Van[]
The Parliamentary Brake Van was a brake van on the Mid Sodor Railway. It was mainly used for the Parliamentary on the OO9 scale Mid Sodor layout.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
The Parliamentary brake van is based on the Talyllyn Railway's first guard's van, No. 5, built by Brown, Marshalls and Co. Ltd. in 1866. Beatrice shares the same basis.
Unlike its basis, the Mid Sodor example lacks buffers - in accordance with the rest of the Mid Sodor Railway's stock - and has no ducket. It also has an added single vent in the centre of its roof, similar to those seen on the Parliamentary Coaches.
Livery[]
The Parliamentary brake van was painted Mid Sodor Railway light blue with the initials "M S" on its sides in red.

Trivia[]
- The brake van's model was constructed some time between 1974 and 1978, as it can first be seen in a photograph from the latter year. Prior to this, a grey goods van was used as a temporary brake van.

The Horse and Cart Brake Van[]
The Horse and Cart Brake Van was a brake van on the Mid Sodor Railway. It was mainly used for the Horse and Cart on the OO9 scale Mid Sodor layout.
When the Horse and Cart was in operation, passengers were carried in the brake van on payment of half ordinary third class fare, but wisely, the company did not guarantee arrival times at any station.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
The Horse and Cart brake van was constructed from a TT scale kit of a London and South Western Railway (LSWR) 24 Ton brake van - with the rear veranda cut off, the front veranda shortened and the buffers removed - running on an N gauge chassis.
Livery[]
The Horse and Cart brake van was painted Mid Sodor Railway light blue with the initials "M S" on its sides in red.
