Back Cover Description[]

Thomas the Tank Engine is a cheeky little steam engine with a short stumpy funnel, a short stumpy boiler and short stumpy dome. He wears No.1 on his side and never lets anyone forget it!

Joining him in his adventures on the imaginery Island of Sodor are his engine friends: cheerful Percy, moody James, proud and boastful Gordon, as well as Thomas' faithful carriages Annie and Clarabel, Bertie the Bus, Harold the Helicopter and Sir Topham Hatt, the kindly Fat Controller who keeps everyone in order.

Based on a series of classic children's books, Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends was first brought to British network television in 1984 by producer Britt Allcroft using a form of 3-dimensional live action animation. Britt Allcroft has since created a library of 78 award-winning 5 minute stories that are firm favourites with viewers young and old.

In 1989 Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends premiered in the United States as featured characters in the multi-award winning Shining Time Station, created by Britt Allcroft and Rick Siggelkow. They were instantly taken to the hearts of a new audience and have since gone on to capture the imagination of children and adults throughout the world.

Thomas the Tank Engine's appeal is universal. He is a favourite character for many viewers and an entire Thomas industry of toys, games, clothes and other products has sprung up around him. As Britt Allcroft says "Thomas is part of the furniture of life. He's one of a kind."
