- "Take that, fire! Fiery Flynn to the rescue!"
- ― Flynn
Buckled Tracks is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series. It was republished in 2025 as part of the "Classic Thomas Story Collection" with slight alterations to the images and text.
Plot[]
It is a hot summer's day on the Island of Sodor. Belle and Flynn are busy putting out fires all over the island.
It is extremely hot at Knapford Station, too. Dowager Hatt brings the Fat Controller a special hat to keep his head cool. She explains a white hat will reflect the heat, but the Fat Controller doesn't like it as it makes him look like he's going on safari.
It starts to get so hot that the tracks begin to buckle and bend. If an engine were to travel on the buckled rails, they could derail. Belle goes over the track and sees that they are buckled, but she doesn't want to spray them with water as she might need her water for a fire.
Later that day, Belle and Flynn are called out to another fire. Belle wished she had cooled down the buckled track down earlier as she now derails as she rushes over it. She tells Flynn to go and fight the fire on his own before it can spread. Flynn uses his road wheels to get to the fire and soon manages to extinguish it.
Thomas and Rocky arrive to get Belle re-railed. Thomas has a brilliant idea and suggests they paint the rails white to stop them from buckling under extreme heat which they soon do. The Fat Controller still doesn't like his white hat, though.
