“Call yourself a car?! You're a disgrace to the road! Find yourself a scrapyard!”
George insults Caroline[src]

Caroline is an elderly car owned by a cricketer from the Elsbridge Cricket Club.

Biography

As in The Railway Series, Caroline and the cricketers went in pursuit of Stepney and the missing cricket ball. She got tired out after the journey, so she was given a lift back on a train with the cricketers by Stepney.

Caroline later helped the Fat Controller reach Lady Hatt's birthday after he popped his tyre in a pothole, until she overheated. She was then insulted by George, who later took the Fat Controller to Thomas until he had his own accident. The Fat Controller promised to get help for Caroline after he left.

Personality

Caroline enjoys taking leisurely drives along the beautiful Sudrian countryside. She dislikes being driven along the road too fast however, as it causes her engine to overheat. She is very calm in nature and appreciates the engines. She loves the occasional picnic where she is parked for the duration. She used to think railway engines were silly until she discovered how they can save the wear and tear on her wheels.

Technical Details

Basis

In The Railway Series, Caroline is based on a 1926 Morris Oxford Bullnose saloon. However, her television series counterpart is an amalgamation of her Railway Series basis, and a 1929 Ford Model A two door sedan.

Livery

Caroline is painted red with black fenders, a gold radiator and a grey rooftop. Her name is written on her sides in white.

In the video game Railway Adventures, some magazine stories, and some promotional art, her rooftop is depicted red.

In the De Agostini magazines, a car with the same basis as Caroline appears depicted in a green livery. A maroon four-door saloon variant appears in the books, Christmas in Wellsworth and Thomas and the Christmas Tree.

Trivia

  • Caroline is the first female non rail-vehicle character to appear in the series.
  • Caroline's television series model did not have moveable eyes, instead using flat cutouts made most likely of paper.
  • Both George Carlin and Alec Baldwin gave Caroline a Southern accent.
  • Her face design is a standard on cartoon cars (nose and mouth on the grill and eyes where her headlights would be).
  • Caroline's horn sound was reused for Bertie's current horn sound. It was also used for a bus of the same type as Bertie in the fourth series episode Rusty to the Rescue and an unseen vehicle in Harvey to the Rescue.
  • Most merchandise incorrectly gives her a yellow radiator, probably due to the use of gold paint being too expensive.
  • Caroline slightly differs from her previous incarnation in The Railway Series. She now has a wider front-end, bumper bar, windshield tensor bar and her spare wheel has been moved to her rear. In addition, she lacks side-mirrors and indicators.
