“Accidents will happen!”
―the Fat Controller

Clowning Around is a rhyming magazine story.

When off duty, Ted the porter dresses up as a clown to perform at children's parties. One day, he is performing at a station for a special railway party. One of his tricks involves a flower springing out of his bowler hat, but his hat blows under Arthur's wheels. Arthur does not see it and squashes it.

The Fat Controller kindly fetches one of his old top-hats and secretly plans a new party trick with Ted. Soon, everyone is staring in surprise at Ted's new hat which pours out a lot of smoke to make it look like a steam engine's funnel.
