- "I'm sorry, Cranky. I don't really think you're creaky."
"And you're not tiny!" - ― Thomas and Cranky
Creaky Cranky is a magazine story released as part of the "Classic Thomas Story Collection" series and illustrated using images from the television series.
Plot[]
It is the day of the children's big party on Sodor and Thomas is waiting at the docks for Cranky to unload the decorations. Thomas tells Cranky to hurry up and calls him "creaky Cranky". He then teasingly asks the grumpy crane if the decorations are too heavy for him. Thomas' joke does not go down well with Cranky who becomes even grumpier than normal. Cranky retorts that "Tiny Thomas" is only strong enough to carry fluff. Thomas insists he is as strong as any other engine, but Cranky tells him he'll never be as strong as him.
Thomas is so cross that instead of delivering the decorations for the party, he decides to spend his time proving Cranky wrong. Thomas urges Cranky to lift him if he is so strong. Cranky, wanting to prove he's the strongest, slowly lifts Thomas high into the air. Then, with a creak and a croak, Cranky's crane arm breaks. Thomas is stranded up in the air, just as Sir Topham Hatt appears. He tells both Thomas and Cranky that they have caused confusion and delay. Thomas and Cranky feel terrible.
Soon, some workmen help to lower Thomas back onto the railway track. The little tank engine knows he has to put things right. He asks Spencer to take the decorations to the party while he races to the Sodor Steamworks to get new parts to fix Cranky. The crane is delighted to see Thomas again and they both apologise for their remarks.
