This article is about the wharf at Crovan's Gate. You may be looking for the wharf from the television series.

Crovan's Gate Wharf is a slate transhipment wharf located just west of Crovan's Gate station, behind the engine sheds. It is here that slate brought down by the Skarloey Railway is transferred into the standard gauge trucks of the North Western Railway.

History[]

The wharf at Crovan's Gate was constructed in 1865, for the transhipment of copper mined at Ward Fell into the trucks of the Sodor and Mainland Railway. At this time, it had four wooden wagon turntables along its edge. The Crovan's Gate Mining Company has its offices alongside the wharf.

In 1926, a loaded gravity slate train ran through the wharf and spread itself all over the NWR Main Line. This put an end to the practise of gravity-worked trains on the Skarloey Railway.

Since 1953, these sidings have been considerably modified. As of 1987, there are now only two wagon turntables and only the slate-built office building remains, the brick building having long since been pulled down. Entrance to the wharf is controlled by the king points by Wharf Bridge, which govern entry either to the passenger station or to the exchange sidings.[1]
