Trivia[]
- Culdee is named after this mountain.
- Translated from Sudric, the mountain's name means "The Mountain of the Companion of God". The name is derived from the fact that Saint Machan (the patron saint of Sodor, who lived during the sixth century) lived in a cave on the side of the mountain.
- According to an unfinalized map by Awdry in possession of the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, its Summit is 2,048 feet above sea level, however this was likely before the Culdee Fell Railway was conceived, which would require a greater height. The Surprise Packet claims the summit is approximately 3,000 feet above Loey Machan. Since Awdry does not claim that Culdee Fell is the tallest mountain in England, it can be assumed that it is smaller than Scafell Pike in Cumbria. This places Culdee Fell between 3,000 feet and 3,209 feet.
- Since comparable mountains in Great Britain (Snowdon, Scafell Pike) have volcanic origins, it can be assumed that Culdee Fell does as well. Awdry indirectly references this in The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways; Skarloey is a hot spring, and Culdee Fell has a network of tunnels running through it (pyroducts) that were used to escape invading armies during the Resistance period.
