This is a behind the scenes subpage for Diesel (AEG).
This subpage contains all behind the scenes material relating to said article.

Background Information

Diesel is a fictional standard gauge diesel locomotive created by the Rev. W. Awdry with inspiration by editor Eric Marriott.

He first appeared in the first series episode A Thomas Promise, which first aired in 2021.

Unlike the original television series, Diesel is a part of the main cast of engines in All Engines Go. Instead of being an antagonist, he is portrayed as one of Thomas' best friends and lives at Tidmouth Sheds with the other engines.

Behind the Scenes

2D animated rigs

Diesel in All Engines Go uses a series of complicated 2D rigs created by Nelvana Studio. These rigs are made up of different assets, which can be stretched, squashed and posed to create the desired movements and poses. Diesel's movements are handled by an animation team, with a posing team to create specific poses as required for certain shots.[1]

Diesel's 2D design has undergone many changes from the design used in the original series:

  • His forehead is now much larger.
  • His nose is more rounded.
  • He now has purple irises.
  • He is much smaller in size.
  • He has dark purple elements on his body, including:
    • A dark purple stripe along each side of his bonnet.
    • Dark purple wheels, valences and running board.
    • Dark purple toolboxes, which now also have grilles on the sides.
  • He lacks his outside frames and coupling rods.
  • His cab doors have been redesigned.
  • His cab windows have been removed.
  • He now has grilles on the rear of his cab where his windows used to be.
  • His brakepipes have been removed.
  • He has a new horn which is a stock sound effect.
