Diesel Do Right is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series. It was reprinted in 2024 as part of the "Classic Thomas Story Collection" series with slight alterations to the images and text.
Plot[]
It is the end of a busy day at Vicarstown Diesel Sheds and the Fat Controller is not happy with Diesel who has been too lazy to complete his jobs properly. The Fat Controller tells Diesel that tomorrow, he can take some trucks to the docks before starting his other jobs. Diesel is not happy about being given extra work and complains that the Fat Controller is always picking on him.
The next day, Diesel sets off to the docks with his trucks. At the docks, Diesel meets Rebecca and has an idea to play a trick on the other diesels. He asks Rebecca for help, but what he really wants her help with is playing his devious trick, but he doesn't tell her that. Rebecca is a kind engine who sees the best in everyone, so is only too happy to help Diesel by doing his long list of jobs. What Rebecca doesn't know is that the jobs Diesel has given her involves moving things the other diesels need to do their own jobs.
This leads to Sidney being unable to collect his steel, Paxton cannot collect the fruit and vegetables for the market and none of the other diesels can do their jobs either. When Rebecca arrives at Ulfstead Castle with Sidney's steel, Millie is puzzled; they need stone, not steel. Rebecca tells her that Diesel had given her the job and Millie says she should know better than to listen to Diesel.
That evening, the Fat Controller returns to the Dieselworks and says that Diesel is the only engine to have done his jobs properly this time. But just then, Rebecca arrives and tells Sir Topham Hatt what had happened that day. The Fat Controller is very cross with Diesel who, of course, thinks he's being picked on again.

Trivia[]
- Unlike the episode:
- This story is based on the twenty-third series episode of the same name.
- When republished in 2024, all references to "the Fat Controller" are changed to "Sir Topham Hatt" in line with Mattel's latest guidelines.
