Doncaster is the location of Doncaster railway works, a locomotive works that was once owned by the LNER. It was built in 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway after the Industrial Revolution. It was here that Gordon, Flying Scotsman and their brothers were built. It was established by the Great Northern Railway in 1853, replacing the previous works in Boston and Peterborough. Until 1867 it undertook only repairs and maintenance.
