"I'm a diesel-electric and I like storms. That's why they call me 'Super' 'cos I'm super at everything no matter what the weather!"
― E.D.[src]

E.D. (nicknamed 'Super' E.D.) was a dropped character from the fifth series.

Biography[]

E.D. was a diesel engine who originally lived at the Diesel Yard. While James was being repaired, the Fat Controller borrowed E.D. to shunt coal trucks, only for E.D. to prove to be a poor performer despite his impressive appearance as he constantly broke down and had trouble with even the smallest of trains. One stormy day, however, a lightning bolt struck the rail in front of E.D., causing him to emit smoke and, somehow, transform his performance. He was then nicknamed "Super E.D.".

Super E.D. quickly became the most popular engine on Sodor, to such an extent that even his driver and engineer became famous with him, and the passengers demanded that the Fat Controller purchase more engines like him. Because of his newfound popularity, Super E.D. became extremely pompous, looking down on the steam engines and believing that diesels were superior. Likewise, the steam engines also detested Super E.D., especially when he came close to breaking Gordon's speed record. When the steam engines learned that James was responsible for the new diesel's arrival, they also shunned him.

However, Super E.D. would eventually get his comeuppance. During a thunderstorm at Knapford, a lightning bolt ricocheted off of Gordon's buffer and struck Super E.D., causing his engine to short circuit and produce an immense amount of smoke that filled the station. Furious, the Fat Controller ordered for the source of the smoke to be disposed of, unaware that Super E.D. was the source. Super E.D. was taken away by Gordon and James and was scrapped.[1]

Personality[]

When he first arrived on the railway, E.D. was not as strong or as efficient as he looked. After becoming more powerful and popular, he became extremely arrogant, pompous and smug, believing that steam engines were inferior to diesels and insulting them at any chance he got, which would ultimately lead to his downfall.[1]

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

E.D.'s basis is currently unknown, though it is known that he is most likely an electro-diesel of some sort, with the story beats running familiar with the British Railways Class 73/74 and their various issues.[2]

In particular, E.D.'s "non-super" state lines up with the electro-diesels' weak diesel engines, while his "super" transformation coming from electricity hitting the rails and him "powering" up from it matches the noticeable increase in strength that electro-diesels would get upon receiving electric power. The electro-diesels required a powered third rail to run on electricity, something that appears to have been substituted in the episode by lightning striking the rails in front of E.D. directly before his transformation.

E.D.'s name following his transformation may be derived from the unbuilt British Railways Class 75, which was branded as a "super electro-diesel".

Livery[]

E.D.'s livery is currently unknown.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • It is unknown what E.D.'s name stands for, assuming that it is meant to be an acronym. It is very likely that his name stands for electro-diesel, a type of locomotive which can be powered by either electricity or an onboard diesel engine, though considering that he mentions being a diesel-electric, this may not be the case (although it is also possible that the "diesel electric" terminology is a mistake based on the connection between his status as an electro-diesel and his "super" transformation).
    • The name Super E.D. and his being "super" could possibly be a reference to the British animated series SuperTed, or the DC Comics character Superman.

Quotes[]

"Just can't wait 'til there's nothing but us diesels working in these yards. You steam engines are messy, slow and noisey. I hate them, but I must say I do like you James. If it wasn't for you, no one would know how useful I really am. Powerful and speedy too. That's me. You know James, Main Lines are built for the likes of me. All you old chuffers are good for is the Shunting Yards. You can be dirty and smokey as you want there. Leave all the Main Line stuff to me. I'm mean, lean and clean. That's why they call me 'Super'. You old smokies are for scrap!"
