Edward is one of the oldest engines on the Island of Sodor. He is patient, wise, kind and very hardworking. With years of experience under his buffers, he is ready for anything. Edward enjoys stories set in the past, but dislikes being teased about his age.

Technical Details

Basis

Edward in All Engines Go is an almost completely freelanced design, as the 6-6-0 wheel arrangement was never used on a real locomotive, though he still retains elements from his original series appearance.

In The Railway Series and Thomas & Friends, Edward is based on a heavily modified Sharp, Stewart and Company "Larger Seagull" K2 class, supplied to the Furness Railway in 1896.

Livery

Edward is painted blue with red lining on his cab, splashers, tender and boiler and yellow lining around his windows. His number (2) is painted on his tender in yellow with a red outline. His running board, bufferbeams and valences are all red.

Trivia

  • Along with Henry, he was referred to by name for the first time in All Engines Go in the Meet the Engines book.
  • While he is depicted with a 6-6-0 wheel arrangement in All Engines Go, Edward's die-cast Metal Collection toy depicts him with the 4-4-0 wheel arrangement he originally sported in The Railway Series and Thomas & Friends.
  • Unlike Thomas and Gordon, Edward's eye colour is not a variation of his primary colour.
