“Who would have thought that one small nut could cause so much trouble?”
―Edward's driver

Edward Cracks a Nut is the second story in the 1985 Annual.

It is a busy day for Edward. When he tries to leave the station, in a rush to get back home, he finds that he cannot move. The guard and fireman check the brakes and find they have seized up. Edward struggles along the line, when suddenly it all becomes easy. When they reach the junction, Edward's fireman goes to check the guard's brakes. When he returns to the cab, he tells Edward and the driver that it had only been a nut caught in the brakes.

  • In the second illustration, Edward is incorrectly depicted as a 2-6-0, and his wheels are black.
