- "What's a newfunneled nuisance, Edward?"
- ― Percy to Edward
Edward Strikes Out is the thirteenth episode of the tenth series.
Plot
Edward arrives at Brendam Docks to pick up some heavy pipes. Gordon and Thomas are there; the latter is excited because a new crane arrived on the island. He thinks the crane looks very strong and could even lift up Gordon, making him cross as Thomas puffs away. Gordon points out that the crane has no engine, so he cannot move unless another engine pulls him. Edward, very skeptical, notices this too and believes that means the new crane cannot be really useful, to which Gordon agrees and says that he will only get in the way. Percy arrives, also feeling excited about the new crane. Gordon and Edward declare the crane is not useful and will get in the way, and Gordon dismisses the crane as "newfangled nonsense" and puffs away. Percy misunderstands and asks what a "new-funneled nuisance" is, to which Edward corrects him, saying that a "newfangled nonsense" is something that is new and not really useful.
Soon Edward collects his trucks of pipes, which are right next to the crane. The crane introduces himself to Edward, stating that his name is Rocky and offers to help him. This makes Edward cross and declines Rocky's help, saying the said insult, Rocky feeling hurt, and puffs away before the pipes are secured.
When Edward approaches a signal, he is still so angry and lost in thought about Rocky that he winds up going too fast. The signal suddenly turns red, so he brakes as hard as he can. But Edward stops so abruptly that the sides of his flatbeds collapse, and the pipes fall onto the rails. As Edward wonders what to do, he remembers that Thomas said Rocky was very strong, but he refuses to get Rocky, and has his driver telephone for Harvey instead.
Harvey comes to help move the pipes, but they are so heavy, he can only lift one at a time. He points out that it is going to take a long time to clear the line. Thomas and Emily arrive pulling a train and stop when they see the pipes blocking their track. Thomas suggests to Edward to go get Rocky, who adamantly refuses and says they have to be patient. Emily angrily adds that she and Thomas have a very important job to do. At that moment, Gordon comes round a bend really fast, and before he can stop, he runs over the pipes and derails, leaving everything in a terrible mess. Harvey declares that Gordon is too heavy for him to lift, and Thomas tells Edward that they need Rocky. Gordon scoffs crossly, but Edward knows that Harvey cannot lift Gordon and realises only Rocky can fix the mess, and he races to the docks to collect him.
Edward arrives at the docks and pulls up alongside Rocky, telling him that they need his help right away. Rocky is pleased to help, so Edward buffers up to him, and they set off for the junction. As they make their way to the junction, children cheer and wave, making Edward very proud to be pulling Sodor's newest arrival.
At last, Edward and Rocky arrive, and Rocky declares he can fix the problem. Sure enough, Rocky uses his mighty crane arm to lift Gordon back onto the tracks, and Gordon is surprised that Rocky can lift him after all. Then, Rocky lifts all the pipes off the tracks in little time, and Edward realises that he spoke too soon. He admits that Rocky may be new, despite his misunderstanding with him, but he is really useful, and he and all the engines whistle, welcoming Rocky to their railway.

Trivia
- Going by production order, this is the eighteenth episode of the tenth series.
- A leaked script differs from the final episode in various ways:
- This was originally going to be the fifteenth episode of the tenth series.
- The opening montage notes Thomas, Percy and Emily puffing around the countryside. The finalized scene is of Thomas, Percy, Bill and Ben at the quarry, as that is another suggested runby.
- Edward passing by Henry was originally meant to take place at Wellsworth, being replaced by Maron in the filmed episode. Wellsworth does not appear in the tenth series.
- Edward's load was originally telegraph poles instead of pipes. This is carried over into Thomas' Favourite Friends.
- Some of the direction at the docks was different; Thomas and Gordon were to be picking up (Gordon is said to have loaded trucks), Cranky was looking on, and Rocky had been delivered to the tracks by the ships.
- The telegraph poles fall off the flatbeds because they are not tied down properly. The coupling of the first flatbed also breaks. In the final episode, the pipes fall off the trucks when the sides of the trucks collapse.
- An extra line from the narrator ("But Edward didn't want to go and get Rocky!") is present.
- Emily says that she has an important job instead of both her and Thomas. It is not specified if they are double-heading or not.
- Gordon approaches from behind Edward and declares he is heading to pick up the Express before he crashes.
- Rocky puts the poles/pipes back in Edward's trucks instead of off to the side.
- The narrator names all the characters in the scene that cheer for Rocky instead of simply "everyone".
- It is likely that this episode was filmed alongside Toby's Afternoon Off, as Toby can be seen in a behind the scenes picture.
- The footage of Gordon speeding along the line towards the pipes is sped up.
- This episode marks a few things:
- Harvey's last speaking role until The Great Discovery and his last speaking role in an episode until the seventeenth series episode, Gone Fishing.
- Bill, Ben and Harvey's only appearances in the tenth series.
- Edward's only leading role in the tenth series.
- The first episode to feature Harvey's shocked face.
- The first appearance of Edward's confused/neutral face since the fifth series episode, Haunted Henry.
- Gordon's plastic model was used throughout the entire episode, most likely not to damage the then brand new brass model during the crash scene.
Goofs
- Harvey's eyes are misaligned throughout the episode.
- Numerous sound effects are out of sync in the US dub.
- When Edward is approaching the signal, it seems to be a few metres in front of him but he is seen travelling much further before he stops.
- Gordon's tender is derailed in the close up of Edward after he derailed.
- When Edward collects Rocky, his wheels are moving faster than he is going, but it is possibly a wheelslip.
- In the shot of Edward pulling Rocky down the hill, Rocky's crane arm jerks up a bit.
- Rocky's eyes are misaligned when Edward arrives at the accident scene.
- Rocky is portrayed with a whistle in this episode, but he lacks it in all future appearances.
