Edward and the Farmer is a magazine story.
Plot[]
One day, Edward is pulling a passenger train on his branch line. At the first station, Edward sees that one of his passengers is a farmer. The farmer brings crates over to the guard's compartment and explains to the guard that they contain his chickens that will be sold to another farmer. The farmer then asks the guard if he can ride with him to make sure the chickens are safe but the guard says he must ride in the coach area.
Soon, Edward reaches the end of the line and the chickens are unloaded. The other farmer is waiting with his tractor and a trailer. Edward's conductor does an inspection of the coaches when he suddenly hears a strange noise. The guard, relieved, informs him that one chicken ended up escaping from its crate and ran off.
Edward blows his whistle to get the farmer's attention and the guard explains the situation. The farmer goes inside the coach and spreads chicken feed on the ground. The chicken begins eating and the farmer gently picks it up and puts it in the crate. The guard mends the crate and everyone has a good laugh about what happened.
