Edward at the Works is a magazine story. The second part of this story is titled Overheated Henry, and the third part of this story is titled Delicate Handling.
Plot[]
Edward loves his branch line and working hard but because he is an old engine, his driver has to remind him to take things easy. One day, Bill and Ben are too busy playing around that they are behind schedule. When they meet Edward, they ask him if he could take their trucks to the harbour while they go and fetch more. Edward's next train is not due for a while so he is happy to help the twins.
There are so many trucks that Edward has to make two journeys. While on his way back the second time, something goes wrong; Edward begins to clank loudly and his driver believes it to be his axle box. When they reach the station, The Fat Controller informs him that he will be sent to The Works for a service and Percy will look after his branch line. Edward is upset and wishes he does not have to go.
When he arrives at The Works, Edward sees piles of old engines ready for scrap and begins to worry what could happen if he is unable to be repaired. An engineer informs him that it will be alright and soon, Edward feels like a new engine again.
