Edward is Late! is a magazine story.
Plot[]
One day, Thomas is sent to the maintenance shed for a service so Edward takes over his branch line. It is Edward's job to bring passengers to the main station for Gordon's express. Unfortunately, Edward is ten minutes late and Gordon is growing cross. Edward soon arrives, feeling very tired, and apologises. The passengers complain to The Fat Controller who reprimands Edward.
That afternoon, Edward is late again. He states that, while he does have a good head of steam, his wheels refuse to move properly. The Fat Controller sends Edward off to the maintenance shed where it is revealed that Edward has sticky brakes, which are soon fixed.
The next day, Edward is late once more. Gordon is furious and knows that Edward can not blame his brakes this time. When Edward finally does arrive, the passengers are not cross but very grateful. The driver explains that, as they were rounding a bend, Edward spotted a large boulder on the tracks and called out to stop just in time. The Fat Controller praises Edward and Gordon is left speechless!
