Edward the Hero is a magazine story released as part of the "Classic Thomas Story Collection" series and illustrated using images from the television series.
Plot[]
One day, Sir Topham Hatt gives Edward a very special job; he is going to help Harold the Helicopter by being a Rescue Engine. Thomas is delighted for his friend, but Edward feels nervous. Edward meets Gordon pushing Rocky through Knapford Station. Edward observes Gordon being fast and strong and decides that is what he must be.
Then, Edward comes across Charlie who is looking glum. Charlie is on his way to collect some children, but he has forgotten the joke he wanted to tell them. So, Edward tells him a new joke and Charlie is immensely grateful. But Edward sighs; he feels he must be more than just funny to be a hero when he is with Harold.
On his way to Harold, Edward helps Dowager Hatt with her luggage. Dowager Hatt says Edward is very kind and, although he is glad to be helpful, he still does not feel like a hero. Then Edward spots Farmer McColl's dog Katie looking lost and scared, so Edward quietly and gently lets the dog jump into his cab. Edward returns the dog to Farmer McColl who is very pleased.
When Edward finally arrives at the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre, Harold is nowhere to be seen so Edward chuffs slowly away. As he puffs back to Knapford, Edward passes Farmer McColl and Charlie who both shout out to "Edward the hero". Edward is very surprised. Back at Knapford, Dowager Hatt calls Edward a hero, too. Edward is puzzled and says he is not a hero, not a really useful engine and he is not strong or fast. Sir Topham Hatt tells Edward that he is kind, funny and gentle and that is what makes him a hero. Edward beams from buffer to buffer just as Harold flies past and tells Edward they have work to do. Everyone cheers for the kind, blue engine who had been a hero all along.
