Elsie is a luggage van pulled by Toby. After his tramway closed, Elsie was brought with Toby and Henrietta to the North Western Railway.

Biography

The Railway Series

Elsie is a small luggage van, and also serves as Toby's brake van. She is generally shedded overnight at Knapford with him and Henrietta.

Once, a stationmaster asked Toby to move two trucks to two different depots before he could couple up to his Elsie and Henrietta.

Basis

Elsie is based on the GER Wisbech and Upwell Tramway luggage van No. 9.

Livery

Elsie is painted brown with the letters 'NW' painted on her sides in yellow.

Trivia

Elsie was created by the Rev. W. Awdry, but was not featured in any Railway Series story. A model of her, however, was part of Awdry's model layout of Thomas' Branch Line. She was mentioned in The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways, and also appeared in The Railway Series: Surprise Packet.
