Thomas the Tank Engine Wikia

“Don't want new coaches! Don't want new coaches!”

After saving Oliver, Emily was given two six-wheeled green and cream coloured coaches. They were introduced in the seventh series and were seen in every series up until the seventeenth series. They reappeared in the nineteenth series episode, Toad and the Whale.

In the fifteenth series, Emily gained two extra composite coaches. As of the twentieth series, she has gone back to pulling just two coaches.

Percy pulled one of the coaches in the nineteenth series episode, Wild Water Rescue when he was supposed to take the Mayor to the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre's 1,000th rescue celebration.

Technical Details

Emily's Coaches are based on Six-wheeled Clerestory Roof Coaches used on the Great Western Railway.

However, the coaches' models are modified moulds of the Tenmille LB&SCR 4-wheeled coaches, which are the basis of the Orange and Red Coaches.

Emily's Coaches are painted emerald green, to match Emily, with yellow lining, cream window surrounds and white wheel rims. In a magazine story, the coaches are painted orange instead of emerald green.

Learning Segments

  • The centre wheels on the coaches do not have flanges, so as to allow them to navigate tighter bends. This design choice was also carried over to the Bachmann models in both HO and large scale.
  • One of Emily's coaches used to be on display in Canada at Nitrogen Studios.
  • Bachmann HO models of the coaches appeared in the 2015 Marvel film "Ant-Man", along with models of Thomas, Annie and Clarabel.
  • Emily's Coaches have fifteen windows on each side for the composite coach and thirteen for the brake coach, whereas their basis has only twelve windows on each side for the composite coach and ten for the brake coach. This is also seen on the Bachmann models, both HO and Large Scale.
  • The Motor Road and Rail version of Emily's Brake Coach can open up to let figures sit in it.
  • Emily was the only tender engine known to have been coupled up to these coaches, with the others (Thomas, Percy and Nia) being specifically tank engines.
