- "Hello, Emily! My name's Whiff because I'm a bit smelly. You're going to help me collect rubbish!"
- ― Whiff
Emily's Rubbish, retitled Emily and the Garbage on North American releases, is the second episode of the eleventh series.
Plot
Emily is asked to help a new engine. Thomas lets her know that the new engine is waiting for her at the shunting yards. At first she is excited, but is mortified to discover he is scruffy and smelly. The engine's name is Whiff, and tells Emily that the two are to collect rubbish trucks. Emily grudgingly sets off with Whiff.
Unfortunately, Emily is teased dreadfully when they meet Gordon, James and Henry, saying that Whiff's name definitely suits him, though Whiff does not realise that he is being teased. Then they pass others engines, they laugh at her as well. Emily runs away from Whiff as fast as she can. Whiff whistles for her to slow down because he is not as fast as Emily, but she does not care. Then Emily stops at a level crossing where Elizabeth is waiting at and wants to meet the new engine. Emily lies and says he got lost, but Whiff arrives saying that he did not and Emily puffs away. She hides down a branch line, in a tunnel and by a water tower in succession but is seen every time, as if it was a game of hide and seek.
She finally manages to lose him when she saw a very cross Spencer, who is supposed to take the Duke and Duchess of Boxford to an important lunch, but some rubbish trucks are in his way. Emily soon realises that they were the rubbish trucks she and Whiff were meant to collect. She tries to move them over, but they are so heavy that she cannot move them by herself. She asks Gordon and James for help, but they refuse to do so since they are busy, and are not even close to be interested in helping moving rubbish trucks. Emily realises Whiff is the only one who will. After finding him, the two pull the trucks away so Spencer can get through. At first, Spencer is disgusted how Whiff looks, but is impressed and calls Whiff a useful engine. Emily replies back that Whiff is her good friend, too.
