Behind the Scenes[]

Gauge 1 figures[]

Farmer Trotter's Gauge 1 figures were custom built from lead for the third series. They were filled in with craft paint. The models were constructed for distance shots only.

The variety of heads used on his small scale figures have led to him going from brown to black hair, gaining and losing moustaches and even changing to Asian ethnicity.

Farmer Trotter's Gauge 1 hatless head from the fourth series was originally Stephen Hatt's in the first series episode Toby and the Stout Gentleman. It was also reused for the barber in the second series episode Bertie's Chase and the Bowler Hat Inspector in the fourth series

Close-up figures[]

Close-up figures of Farmer Trotter were constructed for scenes where he had to interact with the close-up models for engines and set dressings. They were constructed at 100mm, 6 feet or 1:18 scale.

Farmer Trotter's close-up body was originally Jem Cole's from the second series, while the head was originally the Tidmouth stationmaster's. Both were repainted for Farmer Trotter.

CGI model[]

The twelfth series marked the beginning of the show's transition into CGI as a replacement for the show's long-standing live-action models. Farmer Trotter was recreated from scratch in CGI by Nitrogen Studios in 2008, a year before the show switched over to full CGI.

Photographs of Farmer Trotter's close-up figure was used for referencing. According to Greg Tiernan, every detail of the original television series models for each character is carefully reproduced in the CGI model. The models are subjected to many rounds of review before they are submitted to HiT Entertainment for final input and approval.
