“KEEP AWAY!!!”
― Hector's first lines in the episode

Hector the Horrid! is the fifth episode of the eleventh series.

Plot

Thomas is given a job to shunt coal trucks for James and Edward to deliver. Then, Bill and Ben arrive with a new coal hopper named Hector to deliver to the coal yards. He has been biffing and bashing the twins all through the trip. Thomas asks why Hector needs two engines to deliver one truck, and they say that he does not like to be shunted and warn Thomas that he is very aggressive. And they continue on their way, still getting biffed by Hector. Thomas is not scared, as he is sure that he can shunt Hector firmly.

"KEEP AWAY!!!!"

When Thomas arrives at the coaling plant, the Troublesome Trucks are teasing him. But when he tries to get close him, Hector roars "KEEP AWAY!!!!" at Thomas. Thomas backs away from Hector after that, knowing that Bill and Ben were right. As Thomas is filling the trucks with coal, he feels that Hector is watching him. The coal manager arrives to tell Thomas that Rosie is coming to help him fill Hector with coal and add him to James' train.

Later, when Rosie comes to help, Hector scares her with the same roar and she steams away in fear. This enrages Thomas, who decides to finally teach Hector a lesson; he bumps Hector very hard. Hector angrily roars at Thomas again, but Thomas stands his ground against the giant hopper. He bumps him again so hard that he accidentally crashes into the buffers and tips over. This makes Thomas feel really bad, so he apologises to Hector after realising what he has done and asks him why he does not want to be shunted. Hector then admits he was scared because he is new and does not know what being shunted or being filled with coal is going to feel like.

After Rocky helps Hector back on the rails, Thomas shows him it is no hardship by going under the coal hopper and shows him that it is not scary to be filled with coal. He watches Thomas get his bunker filled with coal, and soon realises that being filled up with coal is not scary at all. Now Hector is the best-behaved coal truck in the yard and wants to be filled with coal. Thomas fills Hector with coal and shunts him to the back of James' train. James and Edward arrive and are surprised to see Hector on James' train and congratulate Thomas. James and Edward leave with their deliveries as Thomas whistles good luck not to the engines, but for his new friend, Hector.

Trivia

  • Going by production order, this is the eighth episode of the eleventh series.
  • This episode marks a few things for Bill and Ben:
  • Stock footage from Dream On is used.
  • This is the first episode written by a producer that is not Britt Allcroft.
  • The US dub of this episode has yet to get released on Home Media.
  • Numerous differences were made in the individual airings and DVD releases with scenes being re-filmed or alternate angled compared to the Nick Jr. UK and PBS Kids half-hour TV airing, The Unexpected:
    • A deleted alternate angle scene from "Dream On" when Thomas is pushing trucks is used in the television version. Also, more boxes and sacks of bags were added in the re-filmed version.
    • An alternate angle of Thomas backing up to the trucks is shown. The workmen are moved and a few boxes were moved or added and a workman has brown skin in the re-filmed version, when in the original version, they all have bleach skin.
    • An alternate angle of Ben is used with different eye movements and the workmen are moved.
    • An alternate angle of Thomas backing away from Hector is used and more steam comes out of Thomas in the re-filmed version.
    • An alternate angle of Rosie backing up when Hector frightened her is used. Also, the tracks are further from each other in the re-filmed version.
    • An alternate angle of the scene when Thomas first biffed Hector is used and Thomas applies his brakes in the re-filmed version.
    • An alternate angle of Hector after he rolled backwards is used.
    • An alternate angle when Thomas biffs Hector a second time is used and Thomas' brakes stop at a different position in the re-filmed version.
    • When Hector crashes into the buffers, they fly off to his left before he rolls over in the original version. In the re-filmed version, they slide over to his right and Hector's rear-bogie wheels lift up slightly before he rolls over.
    • The position of how Hector is laying on the ground is different and his buffers are dirty in the original version, while in the re-filmed version, his face is dirty but not his buffers.
    • When Edward and James arrived at the coaling plant, James has a different face mask in both versions and Edward is ahead of James in the original version but not in the re-filmed version.
    • An alternate angle of when James and Edward were surprised to see Hector was used. Edward's crew are seen in Edward after they pass Hector and James moves ahead of Edward in the original shot while in the re-filmed version, Edward's crew cannot be seen, and James and Edward are moving at the same speed.
    • An alternate angle of James and Edward backing up to their trains.
  • Thomas' original plastic model was used for the scenes at the coaling plant. However, some of the re-filmed shots instead use the first brass model.
  • When Thomas is being filled up with coal, his large scale model is used.

Goofs

  • Because some of the scenes were re-filmed, the chuffing sound and steam coming out is out of sync.
  • Thomas has finger print marks on side of his boiler in some scenes.
  • In a close-up of Hector when he is being pulled by Bill and Ben, he is already loaded with coal. This is likely to disguise the eye mechanism inside Hector.
  • Ben's eyes are misaligned when he and Bill explain about Hector.
  • When the trucks sing, some of their eyes are misaligned.
  • Rosie's eyes are misaligned after Hector scares her.
  • When Thomas biffs Hector the first time, his lamp is crooked in the re-filmed version while he jitters up a little in the original version.
  • In the re-filmed version, when Thomas puffs up to Hector after knocking him over, the puffing sound is still heard after he stops.
  • In various shots, Hector's eyes are misaligned when he tells Thomas he is scared.
  • In the shot of Thomas being filled up with coal:
    • His whistle is crooked.
    • His bunker is referred to as a "coal box".
    • He is taller at the coal shute because his large scale model is used.
