Firemen are railway staff who assist the drivers of the steam engines.
The firemen stoke the engines' fireboxes with coal or wood, which ignites to produce steam. They also fill up the engines' water tanks and keep them at a sufficient level. If a shunter is unavailable, the firemen sometimes couple and uncouple the engines from their trains. After the day's work is over, the firemen clean out the ashes from the fireboxes.

Thomas and the Magic Railroad
Thomas' Firemen
Thomas' firemen are part of Thomas' crew alongside the drivers.
Biography
Once, one of Thomas' firemen had fallen ill and a relief fireman took his place. When Thomas arrived at Elsbridge, the relief fireman coupled Thomas to Annie and Clarabel and then went to join the driver and stationmaster on the platform, to wait for Henry to arrive. However, the relief fireman forgot to apply Thomas' handbrake which soon caused Thomas to become a runaway.
When Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt were on the Mainland to visit the Queen, Thomas required cleaning and one of his firemen agreed to telephone a washdown that was further up the line. The stationmaster then lead Thomas' fireman into the station building to make the call. When Sir Topham Hatt realised they were running out of time and told Thomas to get going, Thomas tried to tell him about the fireman, however, Sir Topham Hatt was anxious and told Thomas to get going immediately. A few seconds later, the fireman and stationmaster exited the building only to find Thomas puffing away. They tried calling out to Thomas but to no avail. Thomas later told Sir Topham Hatt about the fireman being left at the station after Sir Topham Hatt asked Thomas why they were travelling at a slow speed.

Biography
One of Edward's firemen, Sidney Hever seemed to have a hobby of singing. He then climbed on top of Edward's cab to look for Thomas, however, he only saw Bertie. Unbeknownst to Sidney, Bertie had to take Thomas' passengers for him due to Thomas' fireman not showing up for work. Sidney assumed that Bertie was on a coach tour before climbing back down.
When Edward was pulling a passenger train and his sanding gear failed, one of his firemen stood on Edward's front and dropped sand from a bucket onto the rails by hand. Due to the heavy coaches and the slippery rails, the fireman helped to loosen the couplings between the coaches, so Edward could move them one at a time to pull the train. After Edward got the train to Knapford, the passengers cheered and thanked the fireman, the driver and Edward for their hard work.
