Flatbeds are pieces of rolling stock with a flat surface. The North Western Railway owns several types of these wagons.

S&M Flatbeds[]

The Sodor and Mainland Flatbeds were small wooden flatbeds with four wheels owned by the Sodor and Mainland Railway. In 1865, one of these flatbeds was used by Neil to transport Skarloey from Kirk Ronan Harbour to Crovan's Gate.

The flatbeds are not known to be based on any particular type of flatbed, though its design is typical of flatbeds of the era.

WD Warflat Flatbeds[]

The WD Warflat Flatbeds are the main type of bogie flatbeds used by the North Western Railway. One of these was used to transport Duke from Arlesburgh West to Crovan's Gate after his rediscovery in 1969.

These flatbeds appear to most closely resemble War Department (WD) 'Warflat' wagons as well as their predecessors, the London and North Western Railway (L&NWR)'s 'Parrot' flatbeds.

These flatbeds are painted red with a brown deck and black bogies.

These are small 4-wheeled flat wagons which lack buffers and couplings, and can be hand-pushed by workmen. One of these was used to hold the Christmas tree at Tidmouth Sheds.

These are long flatbeds which have both bogies and bolsters. One of these was used to transport the Christmas Tree from the The Other Railway.

BR Conflats[]

BR Conflats are small flatbeds with four wheels owned by British Railways. Diesel once used one of these flatbeds to help shunt Thomas onto a lorry.

These flatbeds are based on British Railways (BR) 'Conflat' wagons, of which several types existed. These were used primarily for transporting containerised goods, their name being an abbreviation which originates from the Great Western Railway's telegraphic code for a container flatbed.

These flatbeds are painted light brown with a dark brown deck and black chassis.

BR Intermodal Container Flatbeds[]

BR Intermodal Container Flatbeds are a specialised type of modern bogie flatbed used for carrying intermodal containers.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The container flatbeds are based on those used on British Railways. These flatbeds were introduced in the 1960s to handle intermodal shipping containers, and are still in use on the United Kingdom's railway network today.
