Several types of flatbeds have been used on the Mid Sodor, Skarloey and Estate Railways.

GWR Match Truck Flatbeds[]

GWR Match Truck Flatbeds are small flatbeds used by the Skarloey Railway, and formerly the Mid Sodor Railway.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

These flatbeds are based on the GWR Match Trucks. They are modified with a flat surface, added dumb buffers, and scaled down to narrow gauge accordingly.

Livery[]

These flatbeds are painted oxide red.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • The chassis for these flatbeds were made from Cooper Craft O gauge GWR Match Trucks (3016) and were given modifications:[1]
    • Their ends were cut off.
    • Parts of the middle were cut out.
    • Diagonal W irons were cut off.
    • A piece of styrene was attached for stability.
  • One of these flatbeds was modified with a jib support frame and used as part of the small-scale Narrow Gauge Breakdown Train in the fourth and fifth series.

Short Wheelbase Flatbeds[]

Short Wheelbase Flatbeds are small flatbeds with a wide timber decking used by the Skarloey Railway. They are often used by Rusty on maintenance and inspection trains.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

These flatbeds appear to have no specific basis and are likely freelance designs.

Livery[]

These flatbeds have appeared in brown, oxide red and dark grey liveries.

Merchandise[]

1-Plank Flatbeds[]

1-Plank Flatbeds are small flatbeds with one plank of wood around their edges. These can mostly been seen on the Skarloey Railway, but have appeared elsewhere. One of these flatbeds is used by Victor to transport equipment around the Sodor Steamworks. Another is used by Millie on the Estate Railway.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

These flatbeds are the same design as the Skarloey Slate Trucks, albeit with the 2-bar stakebeds removed and 1-plank added.

Livery[]

These flatbeds are generally painted light grey with black bracing and axleboxes. Olive green and dark grey variants of these flatbeds also appear in Blue Mountain Mystery and the sixteenth series.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • The front of these flatbeds had a normal height buffer beam, while the back had a lower buffer beam to accommodate engines such as Skarloey who had abnormally low buffers.

Bogie Flatbed[]

The Bogie Flatbed is a long flatbed used by the Skarloey Railway.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

This flatbed appears to have no specific basis and is likely a freelance design.

Livery[]

This flatbed is painted brown.

Coral Flatbeds[]

Coral Flatbeds are small flatbeds used at the Blue Mountain Quarry.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

These flatbeds are based on flatbeds previously used on the Corris and Talyllyn Railways, with a planked deck and dumb buffers.

Livery[]

These flatbeds are painted coral with light brown wooden decks.

Appearances[]

Slab Wagons[]

Slab Wagons are skeletal wagons used at the Blue Mountain Quarry to transport large slabs of slate.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The slab wagons are based on the slab wagons used at Bryn Eglwys quarry. One of these is preserved at the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum on the Talyllyn Railway and may have provided the inspiration for Nitrogen Studios.

Livery[]

These wagons are made of bare brown wood.

Appearances[]

Car Cyrn[]

The Car Cyrn is a unique type of slab wagon with a raised end used at the Blue Mountain Quarry to bring slate slabs down from the upper levels.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The Car Cyrn is based on the wagons of the same name which were unique to Dinorwic Quarry. These were used to bring slabs of slate down the quarry inclines to the mills. The raised portion would be at the bottom end while descending the incline, with the load secured by chains.

Livery[]

The Car Cyrn is painted a dark rusted brown.
