Thomas the Tank Engine Wiki

The Furness Railway (abbreviated as FR) was a railway company on the Mainland. In 1923, it amalgamated with several other railway companies to form the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS).

History with Sodor[]

The Furness Railway was the company in charge of Barrow-in-Furness, the junction station for the North Western Railway (NWR), when the first rail connection between Sodor and the Mainland was constructed in 1915.

During the North Western Railway's early years, the Furness Railway - along with the Midland Railway - leased several engines to them until more could be purchased, and they were heavily relied on during the First World War. Among these engines was Edward, who was sold to the North Western Railway in 1921, as the Furness had found him to be a "shy steamer" and were not interested in getting him back when his work was completed. By 1923, most of these engines had returned to their original railways and replacements had been secured.

Victoria - an ex-Furness Railway coach who had previously worked on the Lakeside branch - also ended up on Sodor after being made obsolete, and became a summerhouse in a garden near Elsbridge. In 2007, she was rediscovered and restored at Crovan's Gate Works to become part of Toby's Vintage Train.
