Gordon has a winch which he uses to help other engines out of trouble. The winch can be mounted to his front bufferbeam and has strong cables.

History

When Percy got stuck in a bank of earth at Lower Suddery, Gordon used the winch to help free him. Later, when Thomas fell down a mine, Gordon came to his rescue with the winch.

Gordon's winch was also once used by James when the big engine ran into a ditch outside Knapford Sheds.

Trivia

• The winch seen in the fourth series is a completely different model to the one from the first series. It is likely that the original was either lost or broken, hence a replacement was created.
• Gordon's brake pipe and middle lamp iron had to be removed in order to mount the winch. This is most visible in the shot from Down the Mine which shows the workmen remove the winch.
• James is the only engine known to have had the winch attached to them other than Gordon himself.
