- "Well, THAT is a fine how do you do."
- ― Gordon after derailing
Gordon is a big blue tender engine who lives and works on the Island of Sodor and is the North Western Railway's number 4 engine. He lives at Knapford and is also the main instructor for the Biggest Adventure Club's jobs. Gordon also has an express route.
Biography
When Gordon came to Sodor, he originally competed for the Sodor Cup, winning the tournament. He is also said to have at one point held a speed record from Peel Godred to Norramby Beach.[1]
Personality
Gordon takes on the role of Sir Topham Hatt in the original series, acting as the main instructor for jobs on the Island of Sodor. He likes to see others happy and to help the younger engines with his superior strength, but not when they are disobeying his expectations. Gordon is shown to have an interest in bird watching.[2]
Gordon's boastful personality has been toned down significantly compared to the original show. While he remains stern and easily annoyed, he no longer belittles the smaller engines. Additionally, unlike Diesel or James, Gordon's arrogant traits were almost dropped completely. However, signs of his more boastful side can occasionally be glimpsed.
Technical Details
Basis
Gordon is a 2-6-2 tender engine. In The Railway Series and Thomas & Friends, Gordon is based on an LNER Gresley Class A1, a class of 4-6-2 tender engines designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. He retains a similar outline in All Engines Go, however his new wheel arrangement makes him closer to an LNER Class V2, a class of 2-6-2 tender engines also designed by Sir Nigel Gresley.
Livery
Gordon is painted blue with red lining on his cab, splashers, tender, cylinders and boiler and yellow lining around his windows. His number (4) is painted on his tender in yellow with a red outline. His bufferbeams and valences are red. His running board is white at the front, however becomes red once it reaches the top.

Trivia
- Gordon's US voice actor, Neil Crone, previously voiced him in the 2000 movie, Thomas and the Magic Railroad. As such, Gordon is the only character whose voice actor reprises their role from a previous iteration of the franchise.
- Gordon has the most appearances of all tender engines in All Engines Go.
- While his precise age is unknown, it is implied to be at least over 40 years old.[3]
- A running gag throughout the series is that Gordon's rear coupler always breaks.
- In previous installments of the Thomas & Friends franchise, Gordon's main job was to pull express passenger trains, and he did not like to be assigned freight deliveries. By contrast, in All Engines Go, Gordon pulls freight trains frequently, and has even pulled freight along his express route. He still pulls passenger trains, but the only time he was confirmed to specifically be pulling an express passenger train was in the YouTube short Winston's First Day.
- According to Bruno, Gordon's Express Route runs from Knapford to Harwick and then Wellsworth.[4]
