Happy Birthday, Sir! is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series.
Plot[]
One bright and sunny day, Thomas is at Brendam Docks with Edward and Salty when the Fat Controller arrives in Winston. He tells the engines that it is his birthday and he's going shopping with Dowager and Lady Hatt. He then asks Thomas to take Winston along on his jobs for the day.
As the Fat Controller leaves, Salty tells the other engines about a special carriage Edward used to pull every year on the controller's birthday, but the carriage has been lost for years. Thomas chuffs away to start his work. Winston follows after him, but he isn't thinking about jobs, he was thinking about the special carriage.
First of all, Thomas has to collect apples from Maron Station. He tells Winston that they have to be taken to Farmer Trotter's Pig Farm, but Winston isn't there. When he returns he tells Thomas that he was looking for something.
Everytime Thomas stops throughout the day, Winston disappears. Thomas eventually loses paitence and tells Winston that looking for things is not being really useful. Winston objects and tells Thomas that he's found something that will make the Fat Controller very happy. He shows Thomas that he has found the Fat Controller's old missing carriage.
Thomas pulls the special carriage to the Steamworks where Victor cleans it up. Then, they take it to Knapford Station to surprise the Fat Controller. When the Fat Controller sees it, he is overjoyed and Thomas and Winston beam with delight.
