"Stop! Drop that crown!"
― Toby

Heart of Gold is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series. It was reprinted in 2022 and then again in 2023 as part of the "Classic Thomas Story Collection" series with slight alterations to the images and text.

Plot[]

One bright sunny morning, Toby is travelling up the hill towards Ulfstead Castle. The Earl of Sodor had asked him to go there, but Toby has no idea why. Near to the castle, Diesel jokes that Toby looks so old-fashioned that he is going to be put on display. Toby is worried by this, but he didn't need to be as the Earl soon lets him know that he is there to pull the tour coaches while Stephen is away. While he is pulling the coaches, some rude passengers make unkind remarks about his old-fashioned looks which makes poor Toby feel bad all over again.

That night, Glynn and Millie try to cheer Toby up, but the steam tram still has trouble sleeping that night. Just as he is dozing off, he hears a strange sound. Toby creeps forward to investigate and discovers two thieves trying to make off with King Godred's crown - the castle's most important treasure. Toby rings his bell to alert the castle and the two thieves jump onto an old handcart. Toby gives chase and the thieves think they have gotten away, but Toby is easily able to catch up with them.

Toby shines his bright lamp at the two criminals and dazzles them while his crew jumps out of the cab and captures them. Toby has saved the day and the crown is back in the possession of the Earl. Sir Robert calls Toby a remarkable engine with a heart of gold which makes Toby beam with pride.
