This page is for the Horse Box Wagons that have appeared in Thomas & Friends.
Horse Boxes[]
The Horse Boxes are rolling stock specifically used for transporting horses throughout the North Western Railway.
In the eighth series, three wagons were pulled by Thomas as part of the Circus Train. In the twelfth series, two wagons were pulled by Emily and Rosie as part of the Funfair Train.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
The horse boxes are a freelance design and are not known to be based on any specific type of wagon. Although, their design appears to be heavily influenced by the GWR cattle wagons. The chassis is recycled from a 1-Plank Truck.
Livery[]

They were once used by Thomas to transport Barnaby the prize horse to the country show in the book, Thomas and the Pony Show.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
The horse boxes are based on the British Railways Mark 1 Horse Boxes, built between 1957 and 1958. Horses were carried on the railways of the United Kingdom until 1972, using rolling stock known as horse boxes. These were often used to carry racehorses between the parts of the country where the breeders and trainers were based, and the racecourses.
Livery[]
The horse boxes are painted brown.
Appearances[]
Trivia[]
- In the sixth and seventh illustrations of Thomas and the Pony Show, the horse box is erroneously illustrated with wooden sides. However, in the last illustration, it is illustrated with metal sides.
