"The Island of Sodor is surrounded by beautiful blue sea. It has fields of green and sandy yellow beaches. There are rivers, streams and lots of trees where the birds sing. There are windmills, and a coal mine, and docks where visitors to the island arrive."
― The narrator describing the Island of Sodor in the opening segment between the eighth and eighteenth series

The Island of Sodor, or simply Sodor, is an island in the United Kingdom. It is located in the Irish Sea, between England's Lake District and the Isle of Man.

Description, Society and Culture

The Island of Sodor, the fictional setting of Thomas & Friends, is a richly detailed locale nestled in the Irish Sea between England’s Lake District and the Isle of Man. Though part of the United Kingdom, Sodor maintains a distinct identity, complete with its own flag and cultural quirks. The landscape is idyllic and varied—rolling green fields, sandy beaches, rivers, forests, and charming villages dot the terrain. Windmills spin lazily in the breeze, coal mines hum with activity, and bustling docks welcome visitors from afar. The capital city, Suddery, serves as the administrative heart of the island.

Sodor’s society blends modern governance with remnants of medieval nobility. While mayors oversee civic affairs today, the island still honors its aristocratic heritage through figures like Sir Robert Norramby, the Earl of Sodor, who resides at Ulfstead Castle. Historically, Sodor was ruled by King Godred, whose reign is remembered as a golden age. Legends also speak of a darker figure—Godred the Impaler—said to haunt Black Loch. These mythic echoes coexist with contemporary leadership, including recognition of King Charles III and formerly Queen Elizabeth II as sovereigns.

Culturally, Sodor is defined by its deep connection to railways. The island boasts a complex and diverse railway system, including the North Western Railway, Skarloey Railway, and Culdee Fell Railway, among others. These railways are not just infrastructure—they are the lifeblood of Sodor’s identity, with anthropomorphic engines like Thomas, Percy, and Gordon serving as beloved cultural icons. The island’s name varies across languages, such as “Chicalor” in French and “Rälsö” in Swedish, the latter meaning “Rail Island,” which underscores its railway-centric ethos.

Sodor’s lore extends beyond trains and tracks. Prehistoric fossils like Megalosaurus, Triceratops, and Stegosaurus have been “discovered” on the island, adding a playful layer of paleontological intrigue. Castles like Ulfstead and Callan evoke medieval grandeur, while the island’s climate—temperate and oceanic—mirrors the gentle rhythms of British countryside life. In 2021, Oxford even named Sodor the UK’s friendliest city, a fitting tribute to its ethos of camaraderie and inclusion. Altogether, Sodor is more than a backdrop—it’s a living, breathing world of myth, machinery, and magic.

History

In prehistoric times, Sodor is known to have been populated by Megalosaurus, with a complete skeleton having been recovered from the China Clay Pits at Brendam, which is currently on display at Tidmouth Town Square. Other skeletons recovered at various points include a Triceratops - discovered by Oliver while digging a foundation for a new school - and a Stegosaurus.[1] Models from the Dinosaur Park at Ulfstead Castle seem to indicate that at various points, Sodor was also home to Pelorosaurus, Lexovisaurus and Hylaeosaurus.

At one point during the Middle Ages, Sodor was ruled by King Godred, who lived in Ulfstead Castle and fought off invaders from the island with the aid of his knights. Life was said to have been good under Godred's reign and it was considered a Golden Age. It is also known that a ruler named Godred the Impaler once lived in Callan Castle and is now said to haunt Black Loch, although it is currently unknown whether this is the same Godred or not.

In the present day, Sodor is primarily overseen by mayors. However, its nobility remains somewhat intact, with Sir Robert Norramby being the current Earl of Sodor and the owner of the estate around Ulfstead Castle.
