James and the Elephant is a magazine story.
Plot[]
One morning, James is feeling cross. A coal truck in the yard had overturned and made him dirty. James begins to grumble about needing a good clean but his driver states there is no time for that as there is an important passenger waiting at the harbour. James wonders who he will be collecting the whole way there.
James ends up getting quite a surprise when he finds an elephant being led towards him at the harbour. James is skeptical in thinking he can carry such a heavy load but his driver, who explains that the elephant is part of a traveling circus, says they can not let the children down. The elephant is loaded into a special wagon and James slowly but surely puffs away.
A big crowd awaits James outside the circus tent. James suddenly remembers how dirty he is and thinks the people will laugh at him. Lucky for James, more attention is given to the elephant. The elephant is soon unloaded and is given a drink of water. Instead of drinking the water, the elephant sprays it all over James, thus cleaning him. Next, the elephant soaks the children as well. James declares the elephant to be the most unusual passenger he has ever had.
