Knapford Sheds is an engine shed situated in Knapford Yards. A repair yard is located here.
History
Original Sheds
Knapford Sheds was originally a five berth roundhouse shed, built in the same architectural style as Tidmouth Sheds. They were located north of the River Callan, in view from Sir Topham Hatt's Office at the station on the south side of the river.
Their location was close to the sea and thus very windy, meaning that tender engines had to be on the turntable just right or they would put it out of balance. Gordon was once unable to position himself correctly, and was forced to pull the Express backwards.[1] Sometime later, he fell into a nearby ditch while trying to jam the turntable in order to avoid taking a goods train.[2]
Current Sheds
Since the seventh series, it is a large six-berth shed, with a single-road lean-to maintenance shed alongside. The sheds are also home to a repair yard and foundry, where Bulgy was first restored and later converted into a mobile vegetable stand.[3] Emily, Harvey, Arthur, Murdoch and Salty were based here. Spencer also stayed here during his first visit to Sodor.
Thomas had to stay at Knapford Sheds with Emily after Tidmouth Sheds was demolished to make way for the new sheds. Once the new sheds were constructed, Emily moved from here to Tidmouth.[4] Many years later, after James had an accident that resulted in Tidmouth Sheds being damaged, Thomas had to spend a week at Knapford Sheds for a second time whilst the main roundhouse was being repaired.[5]
