Level Crossings (known as railroad crossings in the United States) are areas where a road or path crosses over a railway line on the level.

These crossings generally have gates on either side, which close when a train is coming to stop vehicles from crossing, as trains have the right of way. There are, however, also crossings in remote areas which lack gates, so pedestrians and drivers of road vehicles must look both ways before they cross.

Although trains usually have right of way, beginning from the sixth series it has become common practise for the engines to stop at crossings for road vehicles.
