"Now I'll be recharged and ready for all engines go!"
― Kana

Mystery Boxcars is a magazine story illustrated using images from the All Engines Go series.

Plot[]

Thomas and Kana are racing; Thomas is a very fast engine, but Kana is even faster. When she races past a windmill, she goes so fast that the sails spin around. The only problem with Kana's speed is that it uses more energy and she has to recharge her battery. Running out of power always makes speedy Kana feel sad. Thomas tells Gordon that he wishes he could cheer his friend up. This gives Gordon an idea and he spends the night setting up a special treasure hunt just for Kana.

The next day, Kana finds a boxcar wrapped up in a bow outside her shed. Inside is a pole which has Kana, Thomas and Percy puzzled. Kana finds a note which states that the next clue is hidden underground. The engines soon decipher the riddle and find the next car underground in the old mine. Inside this car are more pieces of a mystery item. On their way, they meet Sandy and Carly who help the treasure-hunters figure out where to go next.

The final clue is at the farm. Thomas instructs Kana to pull off the purple bow, but he's shocked to learn that Kana isn't there. Kana is a long way behind, struggling to keep up as she is nearly out of battery. Finally, Kana arrives and opens the final boxcar. Inside is a propeller. Sandy assembles the pieces and Kana realises it's a wind turbine. Thomas reads the final note which instructs them to connect the pole to the charging pad. Sandy does as the note says and now there is an extra charging pad just where Kana needed it most. Gordon appears and says that the best way to cheer Kana up had been to fix the problem.
