Several types of narrow gauge coaches appear throughout The Railway Series.
Notable Coaches[]
The following types of Narrow Gauge Coaches have their own separate pages or are listed on other pages:
Talyllyn Railway Four-Wheeled Coaches[]
The Talyllyn Railway owns a set of four four-wheeled coaches.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
These coaches are based on the Talyllyn Railway's first four coaches, Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Coaches Nos. 1, 2 and 3 were built by Brown, Marshalls and Co. Ltd. between 1866-67, while No. 4 (also known as "Limping" Lulu) was built by the Lancaster Wagon Co. in 1866 to a different design. Agnes, Ruth, Jemima and Lucy are based directly on these coaches. The Parliamentary Coaches also share the same basis.
Livery[]
These coaches are painted cherry red with middle brown frames and ends and deep bronze green lining. In the final illustration of Little Old Engines, one of the coaches is erroneously depicted as being fully painted a reddish-brown colour.

Technical Details[]
Basis[]
These coaches are based on the Talyllyn Railway's bogie coaches, Nos. 9, 10, 16 and 18-26. Gertrude and Millicent are based directly on Nos. 9 and 10.

Talyllyn Railway Semi-Open Coaches[]
The Talyllyn Railway owns a set of semi-open coaches.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
The Talyllyn Railway has four semi-open carriages, all three compartment four-wheelers. The first such carriages were Nos. 7 and 8, acquired from the Penrhyn Quarry Railway in 1953. No. 7 was subsequently rebuilt as a refreshments van and eventually into a new four-wheeled wheelchair saloon. Nos. 11, 12 and 13 entered service in 1955, 1956 and 1957 respectively and are somewhat larger and more substantially built than the Penrhyn quarrymen's carriages. No. 8 was renewed to a similar design in 1966. In 2019, No.12 was scrapped, and the frames converted to a flat wagon. Ada, Jane and Mabel are based directly on Nos. 11, 12 and 13.

Trivia[]
- During the Awdry Extravaganza and Railway Series Weekend events, No. 8 was repainted in the Skarloey Railway's signature blue and cream coach livery to resemble Mabel in rebuilt form.
- The Refreshment Coach from Thomas & Friends was inspired by the Talyllyn Railway carriage No. 7, which was used as a refreshments van from 1963 to 1968.
- A Talyllyn Railway poster featuring two open carriages is currently on display at Thomas Land, Japan.
- Interestingly, a fourth carriage accompanies Ada, Jane and Mabel in The Railway Series: Surprise Packet.
Ffestiniog Railway Coaches[]
The Ffestiniog Railway own a variety of coaches.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
These coaches are based on those used on the Ffestiniog Railway. A majority of the Mid Sodor Railway Coaches are based on these coaches. The bogie coaches are based on the Pioneer Bogie Carriages, "Bowsiders" and Ashbury Bogie Carriages. Whereas, the four-wheeled coaches are based on the Bug Boxes.
Livery[]
In the 1979 annual, these coaches appear in the red livery used by the Ffestiniog Railway in the 1970s and 1980s.
