Several types of four-wheeled Narrow Gauge Trucks have been used on the Mid Sodor, and Skarloey Railways.

Open End Door Wagons are four-wheeled open wagons used on the Skarloey Railway.

The trucks are based on a metal-bodied wagon used on the Talyllyn and Corris Railways.

  • In association with Christopher Awdry, one of these wagons was christened as "Mary the Coal Wagon" in the Corris Railway's newsletter, known as the "Corris-Pondent".[1]

2-Plank Trucks are four-wheeled open wagons which are used on the Skarloey Railway.

These trucks are based on those used by the Talyllyn Railway in Wales for the conveyance of general merchandise, coal, timber, fish and beer. The wagons were rebuilds of some of the railway's 2-bar slate trucks.

These trucks are painted in green, brown and grey.

Two narrow gauge open wagons appeared appear on Awdry's OO9 scale layout. They were modified from Egger-Bahn 2301 long wheelbase wagons, mounted on shorter chassis with the second and fourth sections removed.

Livery[]

The trucks were painted grey and had "M.S.R." lettering written on the sides in white.

6-Plank Trucks are four-wheeled open wagons which are used on the Skarloey Railway.

One 7-plank open wagon appeared on Awdry's OO9 scale layout. It was used to transport beer barrels, and was scratch-built by Awdry.

Side Tipping Wagons[]

Side Tipping Wagons were four-wheeled open wagons which were once used on the Skarloey Railway. These wagons had special mechanisms which allowed them to tip on their side, so that their loads could be transferred into the standard gauge trucks of the Sodor and Mainland Railway.

These trucks are based on early wooden-bodied side tipping wagons used on various narrow gauge railways and quarries, including the Nottinghamshire Ironstone Quarry, Hendre Quarry and the Glyn Valley Tramway.

Livery[]

The side tipping wagons were painted light brown with grey frames. In Stick-in-the-Mud, one side tipping wagon is seen painted grey with black frames.

Theakston Granite Wagons[]

Theakston Granite Wagons are trucks which were used for carrying granite and other minerals from Marthwaite Quarry on the Mid Sodor Railway.

These trucks are based on the minture gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway's Theakston Granite Wagons, scaled up to narrow gauge.

These trucks were painted grey.

Cattle Trucks[]

Cattle Trucks were four-wheeled open wagons with slatted sides used for transporting livestock on the Mid Sodor Railway. These trucks often formed part of the Horse and Cart.

On his arrival to the Skarloey Railway, Sir Handel immediately took a dislike to the coaches and they were most offended when he called them "cattle trucks".

Awdry's cattle truck model for his Mid Sodor layout was made from an Egger-Bahn 2208 cattle wagon, with the bogies replaced by a four-wheeled chassis.
