3-Plank Trucks are four-wheeled open wagons which are used on the Skarloey Railway, and were also used on the Mid Sodor Railway prior to its closure.

  • In the fourth series, the chassis for these trucks were made from Cooper Craft O gauge GWR Match Trucks (3016) and were given modifications:[1]
    • Their ends were cut off.
    • Parts of the middle were cut out.
    • Diagonal W irons were cut off.
    • A piece of styrene was attached for stability.
  • One of these trucks would often have a crane mounted onto it and be used as part of the Narrow Gauge Breakdown Train.
  • Some of these trucks with their faces and loads are owned by Twitter users ThomasTankMerch and TomsProps.

4-Plank Trucks are four-wheeled open wagons which are used on the Skarloey and Estate Railways, and were also used on the Mid Sodor Railway prior to its closure.

Livery[]

The trucks were brown and grey in the fourth and fifth series, black and dark green from the sixth to twelfth series and appear in grey, red, green and light green from the sixteenth series onwards.

The old coal trucks from the Culdee Caves were dark green with rusty brown frames.

Blue Mountain Quarry Trucks[]

The Blue Mountain Quarry Trucks are tall, four-wheeled wooden narrow gauge trucks used exclusively for transporting stone at the Blue Mountain Quarry.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The Blue Mountain Quarry trucks are based on narrow gauge coal wagons. Some of these wagons have been used on the Ffestiniog Railway. Whereas the real trucks have outside axleboxes, they are located between the wheels on the Blue Mountain Quarry examples.

The trucks are painted in two different shades of both red and green with the Blue Mountain Quarry logo on both sides.

Open End Door Wagons[]

Open End Door Wagons are four-wheeled open wagons used on the Skarloey Railway.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The trucks are based on the iron-bodied wagons used by the Corris Railway. One of these wagons (GWR No. 31987) is preserved at Tywyn and may have provided the inspiration for Nitrogen Studios.

These trucks are painted light grey, dark grey, and oxide red.

Waste Wagons[]

Waste Wagons are special types of narrow gauge wagons. They are larger than the traditional slate trucks, as they are used for collecting slate waste across the Blue Mountain Quarry.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

These wagons are based on the Ruston Bucyrus waste wagon, commonly used in the slate quarries of Wales. They can be found at Dinorwic and Penrhyn Quarries and were used in connection with "American Devil" steam excavators.

These wagons are painted grey.

Other Narrow Gauge Trucks[]

Several other narrow gauge trucks appear in other pieces of media. Narrow gauge versions of the standard gauge Troublesome Trucks make various appearances in magazines and the My Thomas Story Library series. Scaled-down 7-Plank Trucks also make appearances in several Golden Books.

In the My Thomas Story Library book, Rusty, three blue narrow gauge tube trucks appear.
