Netflix is an American media-services provider and production company headquartered in Los Gatos, California. The company was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California. Netflix is a subscription-based streaming service which offers online streaming of a library of films and television programs, including their own "Netflix Original" content.

Netflix had previously streamed select Thomas & Friends content on their platform (mainly DVD episode packages and direct-to-video specials) before it was pulled in 2017 in favour of being broadcast on Nick Jr. and Nickelodeon.

In February 2020, Mattel made a deal with Netflix, ending the Nickelodeon deal back in December 2019, to stream Thomas & Friends in the US starting with twenty-third series on 15 March 2020, and followed by the Series 24 specials in May. The remaining twenty-fourth series episodes were released in 1 September 2020. Although it streamed the 2021 reboot in addition to the two series, Mattel has also announced that Cartoon Network has acquired the US broadcast rights for it.

On 14 January 2022, Series 23 and 24 were removed from Netflix US, although the specials from each series remained. Later on 19 January 2022, the two series were re-added.[1]

Thomas & Friends is also available on Netflix in many other countries.

Trivia

  • Netflix was originally going to stream twenty-second series in the US along with Prime Video and Hulu, but ultimately, Nickelodeon opted to air the series. After Nickelodeon's broadcasting rights had expired at the very end of the 2010's, twenty-third series became the first series streamed on Netflix.
  • When twenty-third series was initially released on US services, it was incorrectly stated to be twentieth series before being amended shortly after. The special episodes are shown separately.
  • In Canada, Steam Team to the Rescue was not initially released alongside the rest of twenty-third series. It was eventually released on 4th September 2020.
  • The twenty two series before the last two series of the original Thomas & Friends series have not yet been included to Netflix's platform in the US. The other Thomas specials that have previously been added to Netflix also did not return. Even the specials that were made after King of the Railway, which were added to Netflix in 2014, were not added for renewal either.
  • In Australia, Netflix previously streamed the eleventh and twelfth series.
  • In Latin America, Netflix previously streamed the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth series until 2019.
