This article is about the narrow gauge bridge. You may be looking for the standard gauge bridge or the episode.

The Old Iron Bridge is a bridge that crosses over a swamp on the Skarloey Railway. According to former Railway Consultant Sam Wilkinson's 2014 map of Sodor, the bridge is located between Rheneas and Skarloey, crossing the Hawin Dooiey.

History

Peter Sam's slate trucks once broke away on a hill and fell off of the bridge into the swamp. To spook Duncan - who mocked Peter Sam for the incident - Rusty told a story about a ghost engine who once fell into the swamp and now supposedly haunts the bridge.

Duncan initially dismissed Rusty's story, but was later given a fright at the bridge when he saw some fireflies in the shape of an engine and heard something fall into the swamp below, leading him to believe the bridge is haunted. In reality, the noise was created by his driver throwing a large slab of rock out of his cab, as part of a plan to give Duncan a taste of his own medicine.

Trivia

  • As seen in early concept art by Robert Gauld-Galliers, the bridge was seemingly originally intended to be a curved viaduct.
