- "Oh, my! I remember this! Every year, on my birthday..."
- ― Sir Topham Hatt reminiscing about the Old Carriage
Open-Topped Carriages are old-fashioned passenger coaches with no roofs.
Biography[]
The North Western Railway owns one open-topped carriage, which is the oldest coach on the railway. In Sir Topham Hatt's youth - before he became controller of the railway - Edward would take him around the Island in this coach every year for his birthday. One year, however, the coach went missing, and was later forgotten about. Years later, it was rediscovered on an overgrown siding by Winston and Thomas, who took it to the Sodor Steamworks to be restored as a birthday surprise for Sir Topham Hatt.[1]
During the early days of the North Western Railway, it is also known that Glynn (and presumably the other Coffee Pots) used to pull these coaches when they ran the Ffarquhar Branch Line.[2]
At least six open-topped carriages are also owned by the Estate Railway. They are used primarily by Stephen and Glynn, to take visitors around the castle grounds. James has also used them to transport the Sodor Brass Band on a few occasions.
Technical Details[]
Basis[]
The open-topped carriages are based on the replicas of the third-class four-wheeled carriages used by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in the 1830s. Two of these replicas are owned by the National Railway Museum, both of which are used for demonstration runs with Stephenson's Rocket.
Livery[]
The open-topped carriages are painted turquoise with black lining and gold door handles.

Trivia[]
- Throughout King of the Railway and the seventeenth series, the open-topped carriages inconsistently change in height. This is because a blue narrow gauge carriage was mistakenly used instead of the standard gauge variant.
